Gayton Road extension could be delayed to mid-October

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

The North Gayton Road extension may not open for another month.

This project is supposed to relieve some of the congestion in Short Pump. There's already a smooth driving surface, but orange caution barrels are still lining the roadway while work continues.

Henrico County leaders expected this to be done back in August. Now it looks like work will wrap up sometime in October.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch is reporting the county's contract with English Construction Company includes a $1,000 a day fine for a late opening.

There are no exceptions for weekends or holidays. That means the contractor could be fined $100,000 by the time this is complete by next month. County leaders say weather and coordinating between subcontractors are mostly to blame for the delays. Between 10 and 15 thousand cars will drive on this new surface every day when it's done.

If the county and the contractor can't come to some sort of agreement on the fine, it's possible this could be settled in court.
