Richmond Police investigating multiple, separate shootings

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A violent Friday night in Richmond as gun shots ring out in the city's south side.

When it's over - a woman in her 20's is dead and a man, also in his 20's is injured.

The two shootings happened just minutes and blocks away from each other. The first one happened just after 4:30 p.m. in the 3700 block of Rusk Avenue. A short time later, police got a call for a second shooting on Westover Hills Boulevard.

Police say they found 20-year-old Keonna Watkins in the driver's seat of a sedan - shot in the chest and barely alive on Rusk Avenue.

One witness recalls hearing gun shots moments before.

"I heard one shot, then a bunch of arguing carrying on. About 30 seconds later, I heard another shot, then a whole lot of arguing, whole lot of ruckus," said Ronald Clendenin.

Homicide detectives blocked off most of Rusk Avenue, collecting evidence from one end to the other.

Watkins was taken to VCU Medical Center where she later died.

"This is a very long crime scene - it extends all the way down to the next intersection... over a hundred yards," said Gene Lepley of the Richmond Police Department.

Blocks away, another crime unit was on the scene of a second shooting on Westover Hills Boulevard.

There, police say a man in his 20's was shot, but survived.

"We have separate teams, working them separately - if we have any reason to believe these two are maybe related in some way, we'll certainly work toward that end," said Lepley.

Police say it's too early to talk about a motive in either shooting. But detectives want to hear from you, if you have information that can help. If you do, call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
