A Henrico mother is facing charges after police say she wrapped her newborn daughter in a pillow case and left her for dead in the clothes dryer.

Angela M. Janecka, 39, is accused of attempted murder and felony child neglect related to a series of events that detectives say unfolded on August 25.

That day, police say Janecka told her husband, who was at work, that she delivered a stillborn daughter at the couple's apartment, located in the 5600 block of Aloe Court. She told him that she notified a physician who then took the child, according to police.

The husband returned home to clean the apartment and heard what he thought was the couple's cat in the laundry area. He opened the dryer to discover the newborn, still alive, inside a pillow case which had been placed inside a plastic grocery bag, according to police.

Later, police say the couple contacted the office of their 8-year-old son's pediatrician, which alerted authorities to the situation. The newborn girl, who police said was "doing well," was treated at St. Mary's Hospital.

Janecka was ordered held without bond Wednesday. Her husband, who was not charged, has custody of the couple's son. The newborn remains with Child Protective Services.

"It's something I haven't dealt with in 36 years, I can tell you that. It's sad," said Henrico Police Capt. Jan Stem.

Police declined to release further details. Janecka is due back in court in November.
