School year kicks off with several changes

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

There is a lot of anticipation when it comes to the start of the school year, and every school district strives to excel. School leaders want to remind families, being involved with your children's education at home, will allow them to succeed in the classroom.

Many counties will be tackling the Standards of Learning (SOL) tests.

In Chesterfield, students can expect to take it online, and it will be more difficult. Teachers are warning students that you'll miss important material if you use wireless devices, like cell phones, in class. It's forbidden in most classrooms.

The social network cite, Edmodo, will be used by Chesterfield County students. This is a secure social network that connects students and teachers, allowing them to collaborate and communicate online.

For those on the roads remember to slow down in the school zones and stop for school buses. AAA warns that a third of pedestrian child deaths occurs during after school hours. So if you see a bus that is stopped and flashing lights are on, you must stop as well.

In Petersburg, there is a new superintended of schools. Stanley Jones has been serving as the interim and will be given the official title at the end of the month.

Dr. Alvera Parrish resigned in June, there have been 5 superintendents who have resigned over the last 12 years.
