HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - A Hanover teen shot in the head during a weekend party has improved from critical to serious condition, according to VCU Medical Center officials.
The shooting happened on Hilbingdon Road, close to the Steward School in the Tuckahoe area of Henrico around 1 a.m. Sunday. While the parents were out of town, dozens partied at the house, police said. An uninvited group showed up and got in a fight with one man. Moments later gunshots erupted. Many people say they heard several gunshots and called police.
Police confirm one bullet flew through the rear window of a car, hitting the victim in the head. Right now, police are trying to figure out if she was targeted, or just the victim of a stray bullet.
"I just hope she's ok," said Mary Katharine Easter, who has lived in the neighborhood for 25 years. "That is devastating."
A friend of the victim says she was in the car with her when it happened. That friend says she drove from the scene of the party to the Steward School, where EMS crews picked her up.
"When you told me there was a shooting right across the street, I just couldn't believe it. We've never had anything like this before," Easter said. "I heard several sirens and I saw them through the window coming up Gayton Road. I could see the light and I was wondering where it was going."
The man injured in the fight suffered a cut to his head. He was treated and released.
Neighbors and friends identified the gunshot victim to NBC12, however her family hasn't confirmed her identity.
