CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - A Chesterfield man is in jail after he stabbed his stepfather to death, according to police.
30-year-old Bobby Richmond is charged with murder, grand larceny, felonious assault, and damaging a phone line in the death of Peter Casella.
Casella was pronounced dead at a home in the 4900 block of Lippingham Drive near Chester around 11 p.m. Friday.
Helen Harper has lived across the street from this family for 11 years. She woke up to crime scene tape.
"The other officer was out here and he said, 'No, Bobby killed Peter.' I'm like, 'What?' I was so distraught," Harper said. "I'm like, 'How did that happen?'"
Richmond spent the night on the run until he was arrested Saturday morning in Powhatan, police said.
Right now there are few details about what led up to this violent outburst. Neighbors say Richmond had his fair share of troubles, but it's still hard to understand why.
"What happened?" Harper asked. "What set him off? I don't know. It's just sad."
Harper says it's going to be hard to look at this house every day thinking about all the heartache that's happened there. Just a few years ago a terrible fire ruined this house. Neighbors say the repairs just wrapped up recently.
"It's just sad," she said. "I hate it that he's gone, but he can't come back. Things happen and even though it hurts our hearts, I'm hurt to the core."
