NBC12 VIEWPOINT: Yes it's Back to School

For many of you, Labor Day marks the end of the summer, and it means one thing for most of us in the Richmond area….back to school.

For the students, this means waking up early, turning those brains back on and getting back to the work of a good education. And for many parents this is a relief. Summer time can present many challenges for some families, there is increased expense for daycare or day camp. For others, there are long hours of unsupervised children looking for something to do and finding it in all the wrong places.

For me, like a lot of kids, Labor day meant the end of adventure, late bed times, trips to places I normally would not see, summer bus rides and yes the family summer vacation.

But now that school is upon us we have to be alert. School buses, kids getting on buses and increased traffic in addition to many new teenagers that will be driving to school for the first time. Be patient on the road, be patient as you ride behind that school bus or that new driver, but most importantly be patient with your kids. It's been a long, lazy, hot summer and it will take them and you a little time to get back into the swing of things.

And on a note of giving, there are always kids and teachers across Central Virginia who don't always have the supplies they need to get the year off to a good start. If you are in the giving mood contact your local school or go to YMCArichmond.org and see Bright Beginnings.
