Politifact Virginia: Fact checking McDonnell's speech

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Governor Bob McDonnell was given a big stage on Tuesday night, speaking to the Republican National Convention. He spoke for 8 minutes, on a number of important topics.

Politifact Virginia took a look at several of the claims the governor made during his speech, and found that most of what he said, was right on the mark.

Among his claims: McDonnell said that national unemployment has been "...over 8 percent for 42 straight months." That statement is true.

He also said, "...new business start-ups (are) at the lowest level in 30 years." That has been checked, by Politifact, and also found to be accurate.

McDonnell also gave credit to GOP governors, pointing out that they "...lead seven of the 10 states, with the lowest unemployment rates." That is true, but according to Politifact reporter, Sean Gorman, giving the governors credit, for that success, is not all together appropriate.

"Economists have repeatedly told us that governors have a limited impact on the economy in their state. They typically get, you know republican or democrat, they typically get too much credit when things go well and too much blame when things don't go well," he said.
