More Patrick Henry students hear Patriotic call

Posted: Updated:
ASHLAND, VA (WWBT) -

More Patrick Henry students are answering their Patriotic duty this year, and coming out for the football team. Sam Hart has almost doubled his number of players, and he's hoping that will lead to a much improved 2012.

The Patriots went 2-8 last season, and are looking to regain the success that they saw in the 1990s. Adding players will help - after having 50 total players in the program last year, they have 50 just on varsity this year.

That means there are plenty of positions all over the field, even just a week and a half before their season opener.  The Pats have a quarterback competition, between a pair of players who saw time last year, Tyler Phelps and Chesdin Harrington.  The Patriots have leaders returning in Bryson Wong at safety, but for the most part there are battles going on all over the field, which should lead to a better year.

But it is a very difficult start to the season for PH.  Their nondistrict schedule includes games against Hanover, Atlee and Lee-Davis.
