MIDLOTHIAN, VA (WWBT) - The Manchester Lancers all ready had one of the most talented rosters returning for the 2012 football season. Add a Virginia Tech commit to the mix, and the Lancers are definitely on the rise.
The first sign that these Lancers were a talented group actually came last season, when they ended L.C. Bird's long Dominion winning streak. Manchester was not able to win the district, but still the relatively young group had a great win to hang its hat on.
Now the Lancers are looking for more than just one big win. They want to win a district championship.
Tom Hall's crew returns 10 seniors on offense, including all 5 along the offensive line (which Hall calls the team's "backbone"). Hall also has a senior leading the show, in solid quarterback Dwayne Allen.
But the player that may put the Lancers over the top is a new face. 6'2" 210 lb Holland Fisher transferred from Clover Hill in the spring, and instantly became an impact player. The Virginia Tech commit will play linebacker for the Lancers, and then play different spots in the offense.
Hall has called Fisher "the most athletic player he's ever coached", and has called him one of the best leaders on the team.
L.C. Bird has a top competitor in the Dominion District this year. Hall, with his bevy of seniors and sparkling new toy, is hoping the team can handle the hype, and deliver on the field.
But Manchester opens up with a very tough test, Thursday against Meadowbrook.
