Update: Revitalization project in Petersburg

Posted: Updated:
PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) -

A non-profit group working to revitalize a portion of Petersburg is making progress. In January, we first told you about the group purchasing two dozen city owned properties for redevelopment in the Halifax Street area. Friday morning, the group says plans are on track and moving forward.

The progress being made is apparent.  Blighted houses that once lined this street are now gone. Neighbors call it a real sign of hope.

William Wilcher has lived in the Delectable Heights neighborhood in Petersburg for more than 40 years.

"All of the homes had ornaments -- just nice small homes. It was beautiful," said Wilcher.

Too many of those beautiful homes turned into blighted houses --  boarded up and broken down.

"I just want to see it come back," Wilcher added.

The neighborhood is on the rebound. Reverend Robert Diggs is part of a non-profit group called Restoration of Petersburg Community Development Corporation.

The group has purchased dozens of neglected homes in the neighborhood and is looking to redevelop the properties.

"It's going to be mixed-use apartments and townhomes, as well as, single family houses," Diggs explained.

Since we first told you about the project earlier this year the non-profit group has demolished and cleared eight properties.

Diggs says the next step is to apply tax credit to help fund the 12 million dollar project.

"Our mission is restoring the city one block at a time and that's what we're trying to do," Diggs added.

Construction of the new houses are expected to get underway in 2014.
