A Chesterfield Police officer shot a man early Thursday morning when he pointed a gun at the officer during a traffic stop, according to police.
Police were initially called to the 4900 block of Kimmeridge Drive just before midnight Wednesday for a domestic assault. A woman at the home said she was beaten in the head by her husband, Russell D. Hornkohl, with a baseball bat, police said. She told police that he then took off in a car.
Moments later police stopped Hornkohl in the 13800 block of Hull Street Road, near the Deer Run area. Hornkohl got out of the vehicle with a handgun at his side and repeatedly ignored commands to drop the weapon, according to police. He then lifted the weapon and pointed it toward an officer, which is when the officer fired a single shot hitting Hornkohl in his right arm.
Officers blocked the street for hours while they investigated. The road reopened around 4 a.m.
Hornkohl has been charged with aggravated malicious wounding and brandishing in relation to the incident. He was released from VCU Medical Center and taken to the Riverside Regional Jail without bond. He'll be in Chesterfield County General District Court Friday at 11 a.m.
A family friend says the wife is now out of the hospital. Neighbors say the Hornkohls moved into the home on Kimmeridge Drive last year and have several children. No other injuries were reported.
No officers were injured. A police spokesperson says the officer involved is currently on administrative duties while the incident is under investigation. The last officer involved shooting in Chesterfield County was January 2011, according to the spokesperson.
