Two injured in attacks near VCU

Two people are recovering after police say a large group attacked them near the VCU campus.

A number of back to school events were going on when the attack happened just before 3 a.m. Wednesday.

VCU sent out an email about the  crime through the school's alert system.

"The email said a group of 15 had attacked these two people," says Sherman Henson, a VCU junior.

"It's very shocking and a little scary I guess," says Danielle Young, a VCU freshman.

"At first I was like, ‘Wow!' I was glad I was in bed for all of that," stated Henson, who said officers are always around.

A group of 15 young people ranging in age from 17 to 22-years-old was walking down Shafer Street towards campus. The first victim was beaten near Grace Street by a large group of men and women. Moments later they found their next victim, a VCU student, at West Franklin Street.  The group punched him and threw him to the ground.  All they took was a pack of cigarettes. Police say no weapons were involved.

The students we spoke to said, while they received the e-mail on the alert they did not receive a text about it.  It's something they say is unsettling.

"I don't walk around with my internet always turned on, so I would like to get it immediately," says Henson.

VCU Police Chief John Venuti says the school tries to keep students and the community as updated as possible.

"Text messages and the emergency alerting are for situation of imminent danger for students, faculty and staff," he said.

He says one of the victims didn't report the crime right away.

"One of the things that's really important to know is that when people in this community become a victim of a crime, it's important to immediately notify the police," he says.

Police are looking through surveillance video.  Students we spoke to say they generally feel pretty safe around campus, but are still cautious when they go out
