RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -
It's time for the Politifact Virginia report and this week we take a look back at George Allen's record to see if what he did during his time in Washington, matches up with what he "says" he did.
Allen has been forced to defend the massive spending that took place while he was in the senate. During a recent debate he claimed that when he left the senate, the country was on a trajectory toward a balanced budget.
According to Politifact Virginia, Allen's claim is only half true.
Allen's team points out that from 2004 to 2007 deficits were starting to track down, and he cites a report from the Congressional Budget Office that shows that budget was on track to be balanced in 2011 and even run a surplus in 2012.
But he neglects to point out a key part of that projection, the sunset of the Bush tax cuts, something Allen steadily opposed as early as 2006.
"What we found from the CBO estimates back then in 2001, is that if you had extended the Bush tax cuts permanently, there would have been rising deficits up to around 2016 then it would have leveled off slightly," said Sean Gorman with Politifact Virginia.
