University of Richmond gets high marks

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

The University of Richmond is getting some high marks. It's been named one of the most beautiful schools and one of the happiest colleges in the country.

Newsweek is ranking the U of R as the 23rd most beautiful campus and the 7th happiest school in the country - two things in which most schools would love this kind of recognition.

Gil Villanueva is the dean of admissions at U of R. He said he won't complain making this list.  Having a pretty campus makes it easier for him to attract students.

"By being on campus, they really get a pretty good sense in terms of what it might be like for them as an undergraduate here," Villanueva said.

Being named one of the most beautiful schools in the country is more than just the aesthetics on campus, it also takes into account how attractive the students find each other.

U of R also cracked the top ten for happiest schools because it has a high retention rate.

94 percent of students stay at the school and 92 percent say they'd choose to go to U of R if they had to make the decision over again.

Admissions officials say national publicity from lists like this does help with recruitment. Often students and parents from far away say lists like this piqued their interest in U of R.

School officials say they always think the school has a lot to offer. They say it's nice to have someone on the outside agree.

"Whenever you're featured in an article that talks about all the good things that are happening on your campus, those types of, you really can't buy that kind of marketing."

The number of applications for the University of Richmond has nearly doubled since 2006.

The university says having a basketball team make the Sweet 16 last year also helps with recruitment.
