Williamsburg community ready for pro golf again

WILLIAMSBURG, VA (WWBT) - After a two year absence, professional golf is returning to Kingsmill.

The LPGA's Kingsmill Championship will take place September 3rd-9th at the course that was a longtime annual host for PGA and LPGA events.

The tour pulled in the event in 2009 after the recession hit the tour hard, and they could not find title sponsorship for the event.  But a new group bought the golf course, Xanterra, and signed on for two years of having the golf course's name on the event, which ensure that pro golf would return to Williamsburg.

Director of Golf Wayne Nooe says tickets are all ready selling well, and over 1300 volunteers have signed up to help that week.

The vast majority of the LPGA Tour's top players are expected to compete in the Kingsmill Championship, including previously announced commitments from Cristie Kerr, Paula Creamer and Lexi Thompson.
