Talks of moving baseball to Shockoe Bottom

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

There are discussions to move the baseball stadium from the Boulevard to Shockoe Bottom.

This isn't the first time the Bottom has been discussed as the new home for baseball, but financing, parking and building in a flood plain made those plans strike out.

There are talks right now between the Flying Squirrels and the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce. According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the city could make a ballpark part of a larger development Downtown.

The Chamber says this wouldn't be a regional project. The Chamber's president tells the paper that Henrico and Chesterfield counties have made it clear they aren't prepared to finance a new stadium.

It's estimated that it would cost $50 million and take 18 months to build. If this happens, the City would make the area near the Diamond a retail area and make the Diamond a potential site for Redskins Training Camp.
