Taylor takes success from James River to Olympic Games

Shannon Taylor is taking the field in London with the USA Field Hockey team, going for a gold medal, but her journey to the game stretches back more than 15 years and runs right through the Richmond area.

Taylor spent her final two years of high school at James River, leading the Rapids to a 2002 state championship.  After high school, Taylor spent three years at the University of Richmond, before transferring to Syracuse.  In 2008, she led the nation in goal scoring and was named to the USA developmental team in 2009, sending her to San Diego.

2010 saw Taylor named the national team, and she led the Americans to a win in the 2011 Pan-Am games, where they upset top ranked Argentina and earned an automatic berth into the Olympics.  Taylor is the squad's leading goal scorer entering the Olympic games.

Taylor and Team USA's quest for a gold medal got off to a rough start on Sunday, as they fell to Germany, 2-1.  They will take on Argentina Tuesday in pool play.
