Mother of wandering toddler found

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

The family of the toddler who was found wandering outside alone at the Essex Village Apartments has come forward.

The child is not hurt, police are still investigating.

Throughout Thursday morning, Henrico Police officers went door to door at the apartment complex looking for the toddler's family.  It took releasing a photo of the child to the public before somebody came forward.  By then, it had been several hours since the first 911 call.

The 911 call came in just after 2:30 a.m. for a little girl found alone outside .

"She was walking and crying and you could tell she was scared," says Brittany Jones.  Jones, who is also a mother, just happened to look out her window when she saw the child.  She called 911.

"It just had me in shock because it was so late in the morning," says Jones.

She says she does not know the girl, but her motherly instincts kicked in.

"I approached her as if I approached my own child: with love and care, to show her that I wasn't going to hurt her. I just wanted to help," she said.

Jones says the girl's diaper was wet but the toddler carried her own diaper bag.  She didn't ask many questions.

"Just are you ok? And she shook her head yeah and that was it," she said.

Child Protective Services and Henrico Police interviewed the family inside the apartment.

When the mother finally came out, she wouldn't talk to us or give her name.

"My daughter is safe and I'm going to pick her up," she said. When asked if she is in fact the mother, she said yes.  She also told us the girl was with a family member last night.

For Jones, she's thankful to be the person who got to the toddler first.

"If I hadn't gotten her, no telling who would have," she said.

No charges have been filed yet.
