Do not insert a Q-tip or bobby pin into the ear to remove wax. This could cause the patient more pain. Often an exam shows the wax impaction which is softened with a 30-minute peroxide soak and then flushed.
At home, lie on the opposite side and put hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol in for a half hour then flush when in the shower with an enema bulb and the warm shower water.
