RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Going green could mean $10,000 in energy improvements.
One lucky homeowner will win the home energy makeover — but you can't win, if you don't enter.
If the AC is running and your house won't cool down, the solution could be tied to the home's energy efficiency.
"We've seen people spend anywhere from $1500 to $10,000 depending on the nature of their home and how severe the problems are," said Bill Greanleaf with the Richmond Region Energy Alliance.
The RREA has launched the Richmond Home Energy Makeover Contest. One person in our area will win a $10,000 home energy makeover.
"Most people are saving significant energy by sealing their heating and cooling ducts, by adding insulation and sealing air penetration in the attic and the crawlspace."
All you have to do is complete a five minute online survey about your home. You plug in details about the build of the house, its systems and appliances and a few of your personal habits.
"There are hidden opportunities that people don't know about, and by taking this online evaluation tool to enter the contest, you'll learn some things about your home's energy performance, some things you could do to improve the energy performance."
At the end of the survey, you'll get a personalized energy profile citing the potential savings. From there, click the button to enter the contest.
"The contest ends August 26. When it ends, we will evaluate all the entries, pick the top 50, do a phone interview with the top 50 and then narrow it down to the top ten."
Those ten finalists will win free home energy assessments valued at $300. When the audits are complete, one winner will be chosen for the $10,000 upgrade.
"Whether you win or not, you will gain information about your house to help you lower your energy bills."
If you improve your home's efficiency, the RREA offers up to a $500 rebate for work you have done.
There's also a loan program starting at the end of July that can help you get started.
