LOUISIVLLE, KY (WAVE) - Lane closures on the Kennedy Bridge are now expected to remain in effect through the week of July 22.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet along with Indiana Department of Transportation officials announced the delay on Tuesday. Deteriorating steel in the bridge's expansion joints is the culprit in delaying the original plans to have most lanes open this week. Construction crews found that some bridge joints were more deteriorated than originally expected. Crews continue to repair steel and get the bridge deck ready for paving, which is expected to take place sometime next week.
The Kennedy Bridge will remain open during the entire repair and paving process. However, drivers should expect delays as just one lane is open northbound and two lanes remain open southbound out of Jeffersonville.
Along with lane and weight restrictions on the Kennedy, certain ramps remain closed during the construction project. Ramps from I-64 west and I-71 south to I-65 remain closed as well as the northbound I-65 exit to Court Avenue in Jeffersonville. Other ramp closures include the exit ramp from eastbound I-64 to northbound I-65, exit ramp from south I-65 to Market Street in Jeffersonville and the entrance ramp from Court Avenue to I-65 south.
Lane closures are expected to remain until sometime late into the week.
