Funeral for Goochland racer killed in crash

GOOCHLAND, VA (WWBT) -

Loved ones will say goodbye to a popular mud bogging racer Wednesday.

The Goochland racer was killed over the weekend in what investigators are calling a freak accident. This crash has rattled this tight knit group of racers.

Carol Engel, better known as Chuck, died in Fluvanna County on Saturday. The Goochland man leaves behind a family of five and a sporting community in mourning.

His friends say he was an experienced "mud bogging" driver. He was racing when his car hit a birm and overturned.

Officers on scene performed CPR, but couldn't revive him.

The Fluvanna County Sheriff's Office believes the extreme heat or a vehicle malfunction could have caused this crash.

Engel's memorial service will start this morning at 11 a-a.m., at Hope Church off Patterson Avenue in Glen Allen. His funeral will be right after the service at Forest Grove Christian Church.

That's off Hadensville-Fife Road in Goochland.

In lieu of flowers, a trust fund has been set up for Engel's children at the Bank of Essex. This crash is still under investigation.
