Squirrels shutout Reading to complete series sweep

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

The Richmond Flying Squirrels completed a three-game series sweep of the Reading Phillies today with a 9-0 shutout at the diamond.

Craig Westcott tossed six scoreless innings and added his second home run of the season to help Richmond improve to 44-46 on the year. The Squirrels have won seven of their last nine.

Johnny Monell started the scoring early when he hit an RBI single up the middle in the second inning. Richmond added two more runs in the third frame before breaking the game open with a six-run fifth inning.

Westcott surrendered a total of two hits and two walks in six innings of work on his way to his eighth victory of the year. Three Richmond relievers--Jacob Dunnington, Ari Ronick and Jake Dunning--combined to pitch the last three shutout innings of the game.

Every starter reached base, and the Squirrels finished with 14 hits on the afternoon. Gary Brown recorded three hits and scored a run in the third for Richmond.

The Flying Squirrels will have the next two days off during the Eastern league All-star break before leaving for a five-game road trip that starts against the Senators on Thursday in Harrisburg.
