Officials Release Name, Cause of James River Boat Fire

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Chesterfield County officials have released the name of the man who died after a boat fire on the James River. According to the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, 27-year-old Carlos Navarro drowned after he jumped from the boat when the motor caught fire.

Chesterfield EMS workers tried to resuscitate Navarro when they retrieved him from the water but he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Two others were hospitalized, treated for minor burns and injuries, then released.

A Chesterfield rescue diver was also injured, though not seriously, according to officials.

Henrico and Chesterfield Fire & EMS rushed to the scene near Dutch Gap, off Coxendale Road in Chesterfield, at about 8:00 p.m. Saturday.

Police say the boat had eight people onboard when it caught fire.

According to officials on scene, the James River is approximately 40 feet deep in the area where the boat caught fire.
