AMELIA, VA (WWBT) - Three people were injured at the Amelia County courthouse when an inmate attacked them on his way to court, according to Amelia County Sheriffs.

Deputies were taking 31-year-old Joseph W. Greene from a holding cell to court when he attacked Deputy Joseph Jones with a sharp object. Commonwealth Attorney Lee Harrison and custodial staff member Tommy Poore jumped in to help and were also injured.

"Sometimes nothing happens but there's always that one chance and today it happened," Amelia County Sheriff Ricky Walker tells NBC12.

All three victims were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Deputy Jones and Harrison suffered lacerations to their heads and faces. Court employees tell NBC12 that the attack was so vicious, blood had spattered down the court hallways.

Charges are now pending against Greene.

Greene had been convicted in Powhatan of breaking and entering and was serving a 22-year sentence. He was in Amelia to face additional breaking and entering charges.
