RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - After 17 years in the CAA, VCU has officially stepped into the Atlantic 10 Conference. The move was effective at 12:01am on Sunday morning, as the Rams begin their new journey in their new league.
VCU now continues the task of learning the Atlantic 10 rule book and reading up on its new opponents. The Rams first A-10 contest will be on September 21, as the volleyball team travels to Duquesne. The conference will have 16 teams for the 2012-2013 season, before the departure of Temple (Big East) and Charlotte (Conference USA) following the school year.
Following Charlotte's departure, VCU will be the southern-most school in the Atlantic 10. The Rams also join a league that features schools in bigger areas. All of the institutions in the A10 are from top 65 television markets.
VCU was joined in making the move on Sunday by Butler, who also joins the Atlantic 10. Elsewhere, Longwood officially began its time in the Big South Conference, the Lancers' first conference affiliation since making the jump to Division I athletics.
