HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -
A local, historic icon is no more, following Friday night's storms.
Crews spent the day working to remove the "Surrender Tree" on Route 5 in Henrico County.
The large oak is where Richmond was surrendered to Union forces in 1865, according to historians. It's right near Tree Hill — another historic landmark.
Crews have been out there since the early morning hours removing it. They said the tree is four feet in diameter and may even be larger near the base.
They had to block part of Route Five near Lanier Avenue for hours Saturday while workers removed the tree from phone lines.
