Around 25,000 Southside Electric Cooperative customers are without electricity at this point and the company says it could take several days before service is fully restored.
Outage locations are scattered throughout the Cooperative's service area from Bedford County Petersburg and Prince George County to Bedford (east to west) and from Powhatan County to South Hill (north to south).
SEC's electric distribution line system experienced extensive tree damages due to high winds that accompanied the storm. SEC urged its members to plan accordingly, especially for those on oxygen and/or who may require some other type of life-sustaining equipment.
All SEC line/tree contractors are assisting the Cooperative in the electric power restoration efforts, and commitments have been received from Cooperatives in neighboring states to provide assistance. Members are advised to stay away from downed power lines, as they may be still energized. These and other observed damaged conditions should be reported to SEC and/or the local sheriff departments. Reports of damages and outage conditions can be made using SEC's automated reporting system at 1-866-878-5514 or through SEC's Call Center at 1-800-552-2118.
