Despite a tumultuous month, University of Virginia Rector Helen Dragas will keep her seat on the Board of Visitors under an appointment announced Friday by Gov. Bob McDonnell.
McDonnell announced her appointment, along with five other University of Virginia Board of Visitors positions, and two newly-created senior board advisors. Dragas drew fire for the botched termination and subsequent reinstatement of President Teresa Sullivan earlier this month.
"Just as I was disappointed to see the lack of transparency and communication surrounding the request for the resignation of the first female president of UVa, I am also concerned that the first female rector seemed to become the sole target of recent criticism," wrote McDonnell in a statement. "While there is no doubt that the board made several mistakes in its actions, which it has publicly admitted, this is not a time for recrimination. It's a time for reconciliation."
