After 62 years, a new Huguenot Bridge is set to open this weekend, but prepare to find another way across the river for a few hours. Cars crossing this old bridge could be doing it for the last time.
Friday morning there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony to kick off a weekend of events to open the new Huguenot Bridge.
The old bridge is just hours away from closing for good. Crews will close it at 10:00 Friday night. That's when they'll move barriers and change markings to the new bridge. They will have only twelve hours to get the job done because at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, half of the new Huguenot Bridge is expected to open.
This new bridge will eventually have wider lanes with shoulders with room for cars to pull over, wider sidewalks and a bike lane when the second half opens next year.
You'll get a chance to say goodbye to the old bridge, on Sunday. VDOT says it will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. so people can take one last picture.
The old bridge will be demolished after the 4th of July holiday.
VDOT says the second half of the new bridge should be finished by next summer and the entire project done by next fall.
