VDOT is proposing a new toll plaza near Emporia in Sussex County.
Large trucks would have to pay as much as $12.
VDOT says it needs more than $12 billion to maintain I-95 for the next 25 years. It says it will only have about $2.5 billion to use if it doesn't find new ways to raise money. That's why it's looking at adding tolls.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch is reporting this tolling plan would raise somewhere between $35 millions and $40 million a year.
The plaza in Sussex county would use open-road, wireless tolling just like the ones on the Powhite Parkway. Just in case you try to dodge the tolls and get off the interstate, $2 tolls would be added to several surrounding on and off ramps.
Hanover County recently petitioned VDOT saying it doesn't want any tolls added there. VDOT must submit this plan to the Federal Highway Administration this summer. Public hearings will be held later this fall.
