As vice rector resigns, what's next for UVA?

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

More fallout Tuesday from the ouster of University of Virginia President Teresa Sullivan. UVA's Vice Rector Mark Kington — the number two person on the Board of Visitors — abruptly resigned; the latest casualty in a controversy that isn't over yet.

Earlier, Gov. Bob McDonnell, calling from a trade mission in Sweden, applauded the outgoing Sullivan and interim president Carl Zeithaml. But the governor also declined to micro-manage the UVA Board of Visitors for its controversial decision last week to force Sullivan's resignation.

"It's not possible, nor feasible, nor good management, nor consistent with a reasonable chain of command for a governor to make an informed decision about a president or provost or others. Boards do that," McDonnell told reporters.

We also learned Tuesday that it may not even be up to him.

Del. Joe Morrissey (D-Henrico) authored a new letter to the House Education Committee demanding a hearing at the state capitol. Morrissey cited a section of the state code written in 1919 that gives control over the rector and the visitors at UVA not to the governor, but to the General Assembly.

Morrissey wants the leaders of UVA to testify and provide answers that, to this point, remain shrouded in secrecy.

"This is a public University, this is the people's University, and you don't have the luxury of saying, of not responding," Morrissey said.

Meanwhile, questions persist about UVA's remaining leadership. With a president on the way out, and a vice rector gone, what about the rector, Helen Dragas? McDonnell was asked a direct question.

REPORTER: "Will the rector serve a second term?"

McDONNELL: "I'll make board announcements before July 1."

While we wait for word on that, we do know this: The interim president, Carl Zeithaml, will take over on August 16. That's the day after Teresa Sullivan will step down.
