Richmond, VA (WWBT)- The Richmond Spiders have become an Atlantic 10 powerhouse under the direction of head coach Matt Barany, and several swimmers take the skills that helped the Spiders achieve success and will hit the pool with the best in the country.
Richmond swimmers Lauren Hines and Mali Kobelja will travel to the U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha next week. Hines will swim the 100m and 200m backstroke, while Kobelja will compete in the 200m individual medley. Both have put together big performances in their careers. Hines finished 16th in the 100m backstroke in the NCAA Championships, while Kobelja was the Most Outstanding Performer at the Atlantic 10 meet this past season.
About 1,500 swimmers will compete in the Olympic Trials, but only 26 men and 26 women will make the trip to London. The two Spider swimmers realize this, and are heading to the trials hoping to learn and improve. Both say that they hope to make the semifinals in their respective events.
The U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials are June 25-July 2 at the Qwest Center in Omaha.
