Food Lion remains #1 in grocery market share

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A new survey shows more Richmonders are heading to Food Lion than other area supermarkets for groceries.

According to the survey released Monday by Food World, Food Lion's market share is down nearly 1% from a year ago. The chain recently closed two of its Henrico stores.

Martin's, Walmart, Kroger and CVS round out the top five. All four stores seeing their market shares increase.

Martin's growth is being credited to being open on Sundays and selling alcohol. That's something former owner Ukrop's didn't do.

Another showing on the list is the presence of non-traditional grocery stores like Walmart and CVS. Places like those took 16 of the top 20 spots on the list.
