RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - You can expect to see extra traffic around the Convention Center Friday, as thousands of parents and students attend the annual meeting of the Home Educators Association of Virginia.
Families currently home schooling, thinking about it or even expecting a child will be at the 29th annual convention. Friday is the second day of the three day convention. There are dozens of workshops to help parents teach their children at home.
According to the Virginia Department of Education, there were more than 2400 schooled students in Virginia last school year. Many parents say religion is why they choose to home school their children. That's a very small section of students in Virginia public schools.
Home schooling made headlines earlier this year. You may remember the Tebow bill in the General Assembly earlier this year.
It would have allowed home-schooled athletes to play public sports, but some parents criticized the bill saying it wasn't fair. It failed to pass.
There will be a graduation ceremony at the Convention Center Saturday for the graduating home-school class of Virginia.
