Neighbors' Henrico Mosque appeal hits setback

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Neighbors who want Henrico County to take a closer look at plans for a huge mosque on Hungary Road are facing an uphill battle.

County leaders recommend denying an appeal filed last month that calls for the project to be downsized.

The Islamic Center of Richmond intends to build a 30,000 square foot house of worship, including a school and daycare. Area neighbors expressed concerns that the plans do not call for sufficient parking spaces.

Despite the recommendation, a public hearing on the appeal will still take place before the Board of Supervisors June 12.

The mosque is one of three currently envisioned for Henrico's west end, including one on Impala Drive and another in Short Pump.
