Same sex ceremony on military base sparks criticism

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

A same-sex union was performed by a chaplain at Fort Polk in Louisiana - an area that's in U.S. Representative John Fleming's district. And Fleming has taken a strong stand against the ceremony.

Fort Polk officials are calling it a "same-sex religious union," and the first of it's kind since the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell.

But Fleming is calling it a misuse of the U.S. Military.

"Don't Ask Don't Tell" was repealed back in September, but Louisiana law still lists marriage as a union between a man and a woman, making the ceremony just symbolic.

To utilize a military facility for the purpose to advertise or advance a social change of some sort or customs or culture or a specific agenda, I just think is an inappropriate use of military facilities," says Rep. Fleming.

The U.S. House of Representatives approved a measure last year that would prohibit military installations from performing such same-sex marriages. But that proposed law did not make it through the U.S. Senate.
