Husband to face murder charge

Posted: Updated:

HANOVER, VA (WWBT) - A community is shocked and in mourning. Police say the deadly shooting began when a man went into his estranged wife's home and started shooting.

This happened just before 3:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon in a neighborhood off Old Church Road in Mechanicsville.

It was a domestic dispute that involved a separated couple and another man.

Neighbors who heard the shots say they were terrified. They didn't want to go on camera.

The prime suspect is in the hospital right now. This latest tragedy has a typically quiet community on edge.

"It spreads like wildfire," said Madison Lewis. "That's for sure."

The Hanover County Sheriff's Office says, 33-year-old, Ryan Markham, walked into his ex-wife's home on Candleberry Road Saturday afternoon.

He shot several rounds from an assault rifle, killing 30-year-old, Sabrina Markham, and wounding another man inside.

That man had a hand gun and fired shots back. Both men were rushed to VCU Medical Center.

Family says the other man inside was Sabrina Markham's boyfriend. He and Ryan Markham are recovering in the hospital with serious injuries.

"It's pretty devastating," said Bill Curwen. "We're not accustomed to it."

Neighbors at the West Store, several miles away, all know about the murder. Employee, Madison Lewis, has grown up in this community near Old Church road. It's the fourth homicide in Hanover County this year, and Lewis says that's far too many.

"I think it would concern anyone certainly out this way," Lewis said. "It's usually something we talk about, but yeah it's scary."

"It's kind of scary especially since it's so close by," said another neighbor, Linwood Liggan.

Neighbors say Sabrina Markham also had two young children but didn't know if they were home at the time.

Investigators have obtained arrest warrants for murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and aggravated wounding.

Right now, Ryan Markham is still in critical condition at the hospital. Once he recovers, he'll be taken into custody at the Hanover Sheriff's Office where the investigation will continue.
