A Henrico students hopes of winning the National Spelling Bee came to an end Wednesday as he failed to qualify for the semifinal round.
Evan Smith spelled his words correctly in the second and third rounds, but didn't do well enough on a computerized 50 word test to make the top 50 spellers.
Smith, who is home schooled, was one of 278 students to make the spelling bee. Virginia is also represented by 14 other students. Lori Anne Madison from Northern Virginia also failed to make the semifinals. She received a lot of publicity, for being the youngest speller in the competition at just 6-years-old.
