Seven people rescued from James River

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Rescue crews responded to Belle Isle to rescue 5 teens stranded on a rock.

It happened just before 3:00 p.m.

With the rising tide and fast current, the teens didn't think they could make it back to shore safely, according to Richmond fire officials.

As crews were rescuing the teens, a father and son floated by saying they needed help, too.

All seven were brought to shore safely.

None of them were wearing life vests which is required when the river is above 5 feet.  At the time of the rescue, the river level was 6.24 feet.

A Richmond fire spokesman said the people could receive citations.
