Graduation Weekend - NBC12 - WWBT - Richmond, VA News On Your Side

Graduation weekend

It's graduation weekend for many college students in Virginia.

Many of them will hear inspirational speeches from some big names.

Virginia tech is holding its graduation Friday.

First Lady Michelle Obama is the guest speaker.

Mrs. Obama will address more than five-thousand grads and their families.

The White House says the first lady chose Tech because of the community's resilience after the campus shootings back in 2007.

Her visit comes less than a week after President Obama officially kicked off his re-election campaign in Richmond.

The man who most likely will be his opponent is also a guest speaker.

Mitt Romney will address students at Liberty University Saturday.

This comes a week after he made a campaign stop in Suffolk with Governor Bob McDonnell.

Many graduates are about to enter the workforce without a job.

Surveys show more than half of the recent college grads are unemployed or under-employed.

Plus, federal student loan rates are expected to double to more than 6% in July.

Commencement speakers plan to give grads the motivation to succeed.

VCU and Virginia Union have graduation ceremonies Saturday.

Virginia State is Sunday.
