Teens charged for Chesterfield mailbox bombs

Four teens face charges for blowing up mailboxes in Chesterfield County. It happened early Thursday morning in the Brandy Oaks neighborhood.

Neighbors reported hearing loud explosions about 2:30 in the morning. Police responded to the area and stopped a car with four teens in it. Police say the teens had what looked like materials to make bottle bombs. After driving through the neighborhood, the officers found 13 mailboxes damaged and multiple bottle bombs that had been exploded.

"The law enforcement official was there who said 'sorry to bother you, but it looks like somebody took a joy ride and knocked down a bunch of mailboxes down your street' and he said you're one of them," James Lennox told us, one of the mailbox victims.

Police arrested a 17-year-old, 14-year-old, and two 15-year olds. Each faces a number of charges.

"Very dangerous, cause it's right at eye level and you're bending over so you don't know what's in there," Robert Irving said about the prank. He lives in the neighborhood and worries someone could have been seriously hurt.

But, you won't see much mailbox damage along Brandy Oaks Road now. That's because neighbors tell us three of the accused teens were working with a parent to fix the mailboxes early this morning.

"Having been a young man myself at one point, you know I think a lesson like that is well learned and I'm glad the parents had the responsibility to have the kids out here and teach them that," said Lennox.

Neighbors add, this type of mischief is highly unusual in the neighborhood.

Here's a look at the charges Chesterfield Police Department says the teens are facing:

A 17-year-old male was charged with 13 counts of vandalism, 1 curfew violation, 1 possession of a firearm by a minor, 1 concealed carry violation, 1 count of manufacturing and using an explosive device, 1 count of conspiracy to manufacture an explosive device and 1 count of possession of tobacco by a minor.

A 14-year-old male was charged with 13 counts of vandalism, 1 curfew violation, 1 count of underage possession of alcohol, 1 count of manufacturing and using an explosive device, 1 count of conspiracy to manufacture an explosive device.
