Recalled Dog Food Still Found In Shelves

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A major recall has local pet store owners pulling bags of dog food off store shelves.

Diamond Pet Foods is recalling two types of dry dog food: the Lamb Meal and Rice Formula and the Puppy Dry Formula. The company says it could be contaminated with Salmonella.

But a store in Carytown sold us a 6 pound bag of the Lamb Meal and Rice Formula dog food that was on the recall list. The store employee said he couldn't believe it.

He said he was sure PJ Petts in Carytown didn't carry pet food on the recall list.

We took the 6 pound bag Dr. Nathan Lippo at the Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Center in Carytown.

"Yes, unfortunately this is a bag that's on the recall list as updated just 2 days ago by Diamond Food themselves," said Lippo.

Doctor Lippo says he read about the recall and is very familiar with the affects of Salmonella on animals.

"If they ingest it can cause them to have Salmonella if there is actually Salmonella in this bag, if you touch it and then touch your face your mouth your nose in ingest anything off your hands then you can get Salmonella, if there's Salmonella in this bag," said Lippo.

The symptoms are similar in pets and in humans.

"Diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, those are the bigger symptoms diarrhea is number one," said Lippo.

The store employee told me he'd talk to his manager and owner about checking the shelves for more recalled food.

NBC12 tried reaching out to the owner several times tonight, but could not get in contact.
