RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A gunman is on the loose but a school lockdown has been lifted after a shooting near Richmond's MLK Middle School.
This happened around 2 p.m. on the MLK Bridge connecting downtown with the Mosby Court area. No students were involved in the incident.
The students have been dismissed and should be safely home at this point. The police presence is gone. The school was on lockdown for almost an hour after the shooting.
Police say a fight between two men turned physical and led to gunfire. The victim, whose injuries are not serious, was able to walk from the bridge to the school and ask a bus driver in the loop for help. A school resource officer noticed what was going on and police converged.
At the same time, the school principal put together a notice to send home with students and some parents were even called.
The notice, along with a ParentLink message, informs parents of the incident and says at no time did the man enter the building or interact with any students.
Police have only a vague description of the shooter.
The victim was taken to VCU Medical Center.
