GOOCHLAND, VA (WWBT) - Minutes are precious during a medical emergency and in the West End and Goochland, it can take a while to get to a hospital. Now, a new emergency center at West Creek is opening to fill that desperate need.
Crews are still putting the finishing touches on the new West Creek Emergency Center. This new facility is near the Goochland-Henrico County line, right off 288 and Tuckahoe Creek Parkway East. It will be the closest emergency facility in the Short Pump area when it opens up next month.
Lee Vansise is the director of the new medical center. He says it will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, ready for everything.
"We can treat a sore throat, all the way to a patient in cardiac arrest," Vansise said.
West Creek has everything from private patient rooms, to X-ray machines, to a trauma room. Soon an open area right next to the facility will become a helipad so helicopters can airlift patients out of here to another hospital during an emergency.
This new facility has been in the works for more than two years.
The emergency center is only a few minutes away from West End neighborhoods like Twin Hickory, Wellesley and Wyndham. For many people living in this area - they've had to drive a long way to get medical treatment.
"They do have to drive into town," Vansise said. "Which for some people could be a 45, 50-minute drive, up to an hour, so now it's right here in their own backyard."
Precious time during an emergency when just one minute could be the difference between life and death.
West Creek Emergency Center officially opens May 1st. There will be an open house this Saturday if you want to check it out ahead of its opening. That open house runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
