CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Less than 24 hours after the shocking shooting death of a Manchester High School student, police arrest a convicted felon.

19-year-old Brandon Fordham is charged with murder along with two gun charges.

Police said they believe 17-year-old Tre Walton knew Fordham and that shooting was the end result of a dispute.

Witnesses heard four shots at the Genito Glen Apartments in the 4000 block of Hailey Crescent Drive Sunday night right after they said a man asked for Walton to come outside.

Walton, a Manchester High sophomore described by his principal as having a positive attitude died in a hail of bullets late Sunday.

Justin Murphy said his friend delivered what was the last message to Walton from a man waiting in a breezeway.

"That he wanted him to come downstairs and he would know what it was about," said Murphy.

Seconds later, and four gunshots, Walton was left to die on the cold concrete.

"He was waiting in the back of the breezeway and he must have heard him come downstairs he turned around didn't aim or nothing just shot and killed him," said Murphy.

Just after 1 p.m. Monday, police arrested 19-year-old Brandon Fordham.

"This is a dispute of some sort but we're not exactly sure what it is," said Chesterfield Police Captain David Pritchard.

The shooting even brought out County Administrator Jay Stegmaier to the scene.

But Stegmaier didn't comment on a recent crime wave in the county.

Martin Davidson who lives at a neighboring complex says there's probably more to this story than we'll ever know.

"It's probably pretty horrific to have to deal with unfortunately people settle things with guns like they did in the wild west," said Davidson.

While property management said Walton wasn't on a lease, Murphy said he lived on and off there with his brother.

"The guy he shot was a very very good guy he had nothing but smiles on his face the happiest person you ever met in your entire life he did not deserve this," said Murphy.

Chesterfield police worked with the school system to make sure grief counselors were on hand this morning.

No word yet when Fordham will be in court.

The apartment complex manager said they sent out letters to people who live there today about planning to hire security.

A vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday night at Manchester High School for Walton.
