Local talent fuels VCU baseball

Richmond, VA (WWBT)- Baseball players choose to continue their careers in college close to home pretty frequently, but VCU has an overflow of home-grown talent from the Richmond area, and is hoping to ride it to the postseason.

16 players from the Richmond metro area are on the Rams' roster for 2012.  These players have played with or against each other at various levels throughout their lives and now call themselves teammates on a Division I baseball team.  Several players we talked to say that they feel that can improve a team's chemistry and they enjoy having all the familiar faces on the team.

Rams' acting head coach Shawn Stiffler says the team's recruiting philosophy has always been to start in the Richmond area and then work its way out.  He credits the talent in the area to all of the great high school coaches in the region.

VCU opened up a crucial three game series with in-state rival William and Mary on Friday night.  In a back-and-forth game, the Tribe got the last laugh, winning 4-3 in eleven innings.  The teams will play a double-header on Saturday beginning at noon.
