CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Big developments tonight in a deadly shooting near Virginia State University in Chesterfield. Police just revealed details about the suspects and shed light on why they're now worried about gang violence.
Police are still looking for Ryan Christopher Simms. He's a 19-year-old VSU student. He is about 5 feet, 7 inches and 140 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes.
Police say they have a warrant out for him on several charges- including murder. They've also arrested Artarrius Jamarr Stepter- for showing a gun. Police say they still don't know exactly what led to this shooting, but they say it was a conflict involving two groups.
We're told some of the people involved are thought to have gang ties, but again police say- they're not sure at this point that was the reason this happened. They say they have evidence Simms is likely still in the area. The gun used still hasn't been found, so they say he could have that too.
"We're going to be able to find him and we're going to make an arrest so we're asking him now to come forward peacefully. We recognize Mr. Simms is a young man, probably not thinking very clearly right now. Probably afraid," said Captain David Pritchard with the Chesterfield Police Department.
Police say they're hoping a responsible adult like a parent will step in and tell him to turn himself in. They warn though, if you do see Simms, it is an emergency. Don't attempt to talk to him or follow him, just call 911.
