Mayers' strong effort wasted by Spiders

Richmond, VA (WWBT)- Every one of Jacob Mayers' starts from here on out probably won't live up to the game he posted last Friday.  The junior's ten inning complete game win against Xavier making Richmond history, but the hurler still posting a solid performance on Friday as the Spiders faced George Washington.

Mayers threw eight strong innings, giving up just two earned runs, striking out 12 and walking just one.  Entering the ninth inning, the Spiders held a 4-2 lead, but the Colonials would make every at-bat count and them some.  George Washington posted seven runs in the top of the ninth inning to send Richmond to the 9-4 loss.

Shortstop Mike Small was 2-for-5 at the plate in the losing cause for Richmond with an RBI and a walk.  Brian Conway was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

Richmond falls to 16-15 on the season, 3-4 in Atlantic 10 play, and has lost four games in a row.  The Spiders look to get back on the right track Saturday as they meet George Washington again at 2:00pm.

Elsewhere, VCU fell in its series opener at Delaware, 10-1.  The Rams fall to 18-16, 6-10 in the CAA.
